Buying Futon Mattress
While futons were popular years ago and then saw a dying out period, today, the futon is back and stronger than ever. The futon originated in Asia but now, are popular around the world because of their flexibility, affordability, and ability to fold. The futon can also use a foam or cotton mattress and when folded up, double as a couch. You will find a wide variety of styles, depending on your personal needs.
Before you head out to buy a futon mattress, you want to choose the right type of futon for you. With this, you want a frame that comes with a minimum five-year warranty. If you are buying a futon that will serve as both, a bed and couch, this warranty becomes even more important. Then for the futon mattress, choose one that is at least six inches thick for the best comfort.
In most cases, the futon mattress is will cotton, a cotton-foam combination, a cotton-polyester blend, or cotton-wool blend. The key is to choose a heavy futon mattress. In this case, you would probably choose an all-cotton one or a futon mattress that is a cotton/foam, and spring combination. Of course, if you will be folding the futon up all the time, then this might not be the best option. However, if you want something a little lighter weight, then a cotton and foam mattress is good. In addition, this type of futon mattress will not sag and it holds its shape well.
Now, if you want an even lighter weight futon mattress, the cotton/polyester blend is nice. This particular combination is very flexible and soft while also holding its shape. For the ultimate in softness, a cotton/wool futon mattress is the choice. The only downfall in this case is that the mattress will not be nearly as flexible as what you would find with the other materials. Regardless, for softness, this one wins hands down.
Another option to consider when buying a futon mattress is one with an innerspring. This spring would be designed to sit between the layers of cotton and foam. While the futon would still be flexible, it now has more of the feel and characteristics of a traditional bed mattress. The only thing to remember here is the weight will be more.
When buying a futon mattress, the best thing is to try them out. Literally, visit a number of futon mattress shops and lie down on them, one by one. This will help you determine the comfort level best for you. Next, you will need to choose between a bifold and trifold frame. The bifold folds just once, using the length of the mattress much like a couch so you have extra seating. The trifold frame folds twice, using the width of the mattress for seating.
You also want to find out the material in which the frame is made. Since there are so many options, this information is important. If possible, find a futon made from southern yellow pine, which is the perfect choice in that it is heavy and durable. For the actual futon mattress, you will have your choice of size just as with a traditional bed. These sizes include:
- King Mattress - 152.4 x 193 cm
- California King Mattress - 182.9 x 213.4 cm
- Queen Mattress - 152.4 x 203.2 cm
- Full or Double Mattress - 137.2 x 190.5 cm
- Twin or Single Mattress - 91.4 x 190.5 cm
Finally, in addition to the white or off-white futon mattress, you will also find a huge selection of festive and fun colours and patterns. With this, you can add some spice to your bedroom, family room, or living room. With clean lines and transitional design, your futon will look like the wonderful piece of furniture that it is. The opportunities for futon mattresses are excellent, providing you with options for any style.
