Garden Design - Creating Personal Style

Garden DesignThe exciting aspect of creating a garden is that you can do just about anything you want. Garden design is really based on personal style. Because of that, you can use any type of flower, plant, tree, decoration, and furniture to make it your own. However, to show you just how exciting garden design can be, we wanted to provide you with some suggestions to consider. Remember, when it comes to creating an outdoor oasis, think outside the box and let your imagination flow.

For starters, when you get ready to design your garden, remember there is power in creating a good line just as with interior decorating. That means determining location for each plant, whether places in a straight or curved line. Then, while keeping some symmetry, be creative enough to impress. As you will discover below, garden design can be fun and exciting:

  • Plant in groups - A common mistake when planning garden design is planting everything in even numbers. Instead, choose groups of three, five, seven, or nine, which makes much more of a statement. Even numbers are fine but they lack the creative touch needed for a beautiful garden.

  • Pay attention to plant choices - For this, look at the tags for each flower and plant, identifying bloom time, height, width, spacing, and so on. With this, plant your taller groups in the back, staggering height so the shorter groups are in the front. As you stagger, keep the plants off-centred so you can see through the groups to the next group. In addition, keep plants of similar height together and rather than plant everything that blooms purple flowers together, organize colour so it creates a complementary statement.

  • Use repetition - This means using repetition in the garden design by repeating specific plants, flowers, textures, and colours. As an example, if you plan to create two borders for your garden with each facing each other, repeat a minimum of one flower grouping on both sides. Remember to stagger so the repetition is not directly across from each other.

  • Spacing - Another common mistake made when creating a garden design is planting things too close. Keep in mind that small flowers and plants will grow so allow adequate space when planting. If you end up with an overcrowded garden, it will look sloppy and unorganized. If you do find yourself with this problem, then you will need to thin the garden out, keeping things even.

  • Focal point - When coming up with your garden design, think about adding a focal point, you know, something that catches the eye. This might include a beautiful garden pond with waterfall, wind chimes, an arbour with climbing ivy, garden statuary, a garden bench, or even a special arrangement of flowers and plants.

Again, be creative and open with your ideas. A wonderful example would be to create a garden of seasonal colour. For this, you would add colour of all seasons. In other words, you typically see gardens with spring and summer colours but why not add in rich, warm colours of orange, red, burgundy, and yellow or cool winter colours of blue, white, and silver. With this, when your garden blooms, it will have magnificent texture and colour that represents the entire year.

Your garden design might need to be specific to shade. After all, not everyone has a sunny yard. Therefore, you can choose flowers and plants that do well in partial sun or full shade. You will find many wonderful perennials that do quite well in shade such as spring bulbs and impatiens. In this situation, you would simply do things a little differently in your garden by choosing appropriate plants. The result will be a gorgeous garden for you to enjoy.
