Wood Interior Doors

Wood Interior DoorAlthough interior doors come in a number of materials, wood is the most common and usually the most preferred. With a wood interior door, you will find two basic features, which includes height, width, and thickness, and then the method of construction. You will discover that wood interior doors come in standard sizes, which are broken down as shown below:

  • Width - 24, 28, 30, 32, 34, and 36 inches, which are made to fit openings the measure between one-quarter inch less to five-eights inch greater

  • Height - 78, 80, and 82 inches

  • Thickness - If you are choosing a wood interior door as a replacement for an existing door, then the correct thickness should be chosen so you avoid the need to reposition the door top strips.

Now, when it comes to understanding the construction of wood interior doors, we have summarized some information for you.

  • Panel Doors - Panel interior doors are made using pieces of solid timber. With this type of interior door, the stiles and rails are affixed using mortise and tenor joints, or with dowels. In addition, the number of panels used for this type of interior door will vary. However, when talking about general construction, you would find the construction similar with full height stiles on each side of the top, bottom, and middle rails.

Panel interior doors also have a wider bottom rail than the top rail. Then, the middle rail is typically below the mid point so you know which the top of the door is and which the bottom is. By having solid timber stiles and rails, the doors can be trimmed without much trouble. However, panel interior doors do not need much trimming.

  • Hollow Doors - For hollow interior doors, you have construction using a hidden frame that is then covered with a thin cladding on the face. Normally, this type of construction would be from solid timber strips that run down the two edges for a decorative finish. In addition, the cladding of a hollow interior door would generally include hardboard that can be painted once the door is hung.

Because of the solid timber area, fixing a lock and handle is a breeze. Keep in mind that the solid timber is usually on just one side of the door. Therefore, when you hang a hollow interior door, you need to make sure you hang it the right way and using the right side for the hinge. If not, there will be nothing solid in the door where the handle and door is installed.

  • Glazed Doors - For glazed interior doors, these are made from solid timber, which is surrounded by and might be half-glazed, full-glazed or two-half glazed. In most cases, the frame is made from solid timber just as you would find with panel doors, with the exception that the inner edges of the stiles and rails are machined so they can take the glazing. In addition, the stiles and lower or upper rails can be trimmed just as with a panel interior door. Just keep in mind that the type of glass used to glaze the door is important. For instance, in the UK, there are strict requirements. With this, safety glass would be used for a full-glaze. We recommend you choose safety glass for all glazing, although it is not required.
